If you would like to pick up your new passport/ID in Texas (Houston or Dallas) you can indicate this in your application for passport/ID.
If you have lost your passport or national ID card, both of which are valuable documents, you should report the loss to the Police in your location. You should then immediately call the Swedish Police or visit the Embassy to have your passport or national ID card blocked.
To block a lost passport or national ID card over the phone, call the Swedish Police on +46 77 114 14 00.
For the Consulate to be able to receive a report on the theft or loss of a passport/national ID card, a personal visit is required. Bring a copy of the police report and another valid ID document. The passport/ID card will be blocked after you have filled in and signed the loss report.
A found passport or national ID card can never be used after it has been blocked.

All people registered in Sweden receive a personal identity number as an identity code. Once you have received a personal identity number, you will keep the same number for life.
A coordination number is an identity code for those who are not or have not been registered in Sweden. A coordination number is designated as active or dormant. You can apply directly in Sweden Samordningsnummer | Skatteverket
Children and adults who have never had a Swedish passport, ID card or been registered in Sweden need to first apply for a coordination number before they can apply for a Swedish passport or national ID card Ansökan om samordningsnummer i USA - Sweden Abroad
If you do not want your child to have a Swedish passport, you can instead submit a name-based application directly to the Swedish Tax Agency Förnamn och efternamn - Ansökan (SKV 7750) | Skatteverket
It is currently not possible to apply for coordination number at the Consulate General in Houston. When it becomes possible, the relevant information will be posted here on our website.
It is no longer possible to apply for coordination numbers at the Honorary Consulate in Dallas, as a Honorary Consulate is not a passport authority. According to Swedish law, the application for a coordination number must be in person at a Swedish passport authority. This means that only the Embassy in Washington D.C., and our Consulate General in New York and Consulate General in San Francisco may receive and process these applications. When the Consulate General in Houston begins accepting applications for coordination number, the relevant information will be posted here on our website.

You can become a Swedish citizen through:
For more information about the requirements and new updates visit the website New rules for Swedish citizenship from 6 June 2026 – Swedish Migration Agency
Citizenship is a legally binding relationship between a state and an individual (citizen) either automatically at birth or after registration or an application. Only those who are Swedish citizens have the right to have a Swedish passport. A Swedish citizen has an unconditional right to reside in Sweden.
If you are unsure whether you are a Swedish citizen, you can apply for a declaration of citizenship.
To avoid losing your Swedish citizenship if you were born and live abroad, you can apply to retain it. You must do this after the age of 18 but before you turn 22. You do not need to make such an application if you have lived in Sweden for 12 consecutive months and during that time was registered in the Swedish Registry Authorities (Folkbokföringsregistret).

If your question concerns visa or permit to stay or work in Sweden you should contact the Embassy of Sweden in Washington DC. You can find contact details on USA, Washington - Sweden Abroad. Please note that the Consulate-General in Houston cannot answer questions concerning migration issues, instead you should contact the Embassy of Sweden in Washington DC that is responsible for handling of migrations issues for the U.S.
Before contacting anyone, please check if your application is registered: ESTA status online: https://esta.cbp.dhs.gov/
Select “Check ESTA status"
If the system shows “No application found” or the payment was not completed, it usually means that the application was not submitted correctly. ESTA is handled by U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP), not the Embassy or Consulate. Contact them if ESTA is not available or payment is missing:
Open: 24/7
When contacting them, have the following information ready:
If you used a private ESTA vendor (not the official DHS site), you will need to contact that company directly. Many charge additional fees and are not affiliated with the US government. The only official site is: https://esta.cbp.dhs.gov/
If your application is not registered, you can apply directly through the official site – there is no harm in submitting a new application if there is no valid ESTA.
The Electoral Register
Swedes residing abroad (utlandssvenskar) and other eligible voters remain in the Electoral Register (röstlängden) for ten years after their emigration is recorded in the Tax Agency’s population register (folkbokföringen).
After ten years, a notification form (“Ny adress/röstlängd för utvandrad”) must be submitted to the Tax Agency to remain in the Electoral Register for an additional ten years. The form must be received by the Tax Agency no later than 30 days prior to Election Day.
Even if a notification is not made 30 days prior to Election Day, Swedish voters abroad may still vote in the election – by mail or in person. A vote from abroad counts as long as it is received by the Election Authority no later than the day before Election Day. Voting in an election is considered a request to remain in the electoral register for the following ten years.
> Read more on the Election Authority’s website.
Do I need a voting card to vote? - No, you can vote without a voting card, both by mail and in person.
I'm not sure I'm in the Electoral Register (röstlängden), can I still vote? - Yes you can - as long as you meet the eligibility requirements above. And your vote counts as a reregistration for another 10 years.
More information about elections can be found on the Election Authority’s website.
