Coordination number

The Consulate General in Shanghai requests coordination numbers for newborn babies and persons who have never had a Swedish passport, national ID card or have been registered in Sweden for those residing in Shanghai, Anhui, Jiangsu and Zhejiang. Coordination numbers are requested for passport purposes only. The application is free of charge.

The Consulate General handles matters concerning coordination numbers and passport applications for newborn babies, Wednesdays at 10:00 - 11:00, only by appointment.

Before you book an appointment, you need to prepare several documents that need to be translated and Apostille stamped. Read more about the requirements for requisitioning coordination numbers here.

At least one guardian and the child must visit the Consulate General at the time of application.

The processing of coordination numbers and decisions from the Swedish Tax Agency can take up to eight weeks. After a decision, the applicant has three months to apply for a passport.

As of June 2018, a coordination number can have two different statuses, active and suspended. A coordination number will be suspended at the end of the fifth calendar year unless a notification or application for renewal has been received by the Swedish Tax Agency.

If a person with a dormant coordination number applies for a passport, the application will be put on hold pending a decision from the Swedish Tax Agency. Birth certificates in the original need to be presented when applying for renewal of coordination numbers.
