Vote in the Swedish General Election of 2026

On September 13, 2026 Sweden will hold its next general election. All Swedish citizens who are 18 years old and above, and have been registered as residing in Sweden at some point, are eligible to vote.

Advance voting at the embassy in Ottawa

You cannot vote on the election day from outside of Sweden. you must vote in advance (förtidsrösta) if voting from abroad. Dates when you can vote in advance at the embassy will be announced closer to the election.

You can also vote in advance at one of our consulates. Information about when and where will be announced closer to the election.

Voting by post from Canada

To vote by post you need postal voting material. If you are registered in the electoral register this will be sent to your last registered address. If you have not recieved the postal voting material You can order it starting June 2026 from here: Order material for postal voting (Swedish only)- website of the Swedish Election Authority. You can also obtain postal voting material at the Embassy in Ottawa and the consulates in Canada.

The earliest you can send a postal vote is July 30, 2026.

Eligibility to vote for Swedish citizens abroad

You can vote in the election for the European parliament if you

  • Are a Swedish citizen
  • have turned 18 years old no later than election day
  • have been registered as residing in Sweden at some point.
