Temporary Travel Ban and limited possibilities of obtaining a visa to Sweden

On 18 March, the Government decided to temporarily stop non-essential travel to Sweden to mitigate the effects of the COVID-19 outbreak and reduce the spread of the virus. The decision took effect on 19 March and will initially apply for 30 days. This is an exceptional measure that will not apply for longer than necessary. Due to the coronavirus and the temporary entry ban to Sweden, the Swedish Migration Agency has decided that the majority of visa applications will be rejected. This applies if you wish to visit Sweden and are a citizen of a country outside the EU.

Travel restrictions and national emergency in the UK

In response to the European Council’s and the European Commission’s call for travel restrictions, the Swedish Government decided today, 18 March, to temporarily stop non-essential travel to Sweden to mitigate the effects of the COVID-19 outbreak and reduce the spread of the disease. In light of the extensive spread of the COVID-19 virus and the rapidly changing and uncertain situation for travellers, the Swedish Ministry for Foreign Affairs has extended the decision it took on 14 March 2020 to advise against non-essential travel to all countries so that it applies until 15 June 2020. For countries or areas to which the MFA had advised against travel before 14 March 2020, these decisions still apply. The decision to extend the advice against non-essential travel to all countries was taken on 3 April 2020. This advice applies until 15 June 2020, when the situation will be reappraised. UK Foreign & Commonwealth Office (FCO) advises against all non-essential international travel. This applies for an indefinite period due to unprecedented international border closures and other restrictions. All countries may restrict travel without notice.
