On October 6, 2025, The Nobel Assembly at Karolinska Institutet announced that Shimon Sakaguchi, Professor at Osaka University, has been awarded the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine.
He is awarded the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine jointly with fellow Nobel laureates, Mary E. Brunkow, Senior Program Manager at the Institute for Systems Biology, and Fred Ramsdell, Scientific Advisor at Sonoma Biotherapeutics. The award recognizes the researcher’s groundbreaking discoveries in the field of the peripheral immune tolerance.
The Nobel Prize was established by Alfred Nobel of Sweden. The first award was given in 1901. The Nobel Prize honors outstanding achievements in the fields of physics, chemistry, physiology or medicine, literature, and peace. In 1969, a new award, the Sveriges Riksbank Prize in Economic Sciences in Memory of Alfred Nobel, was established. The award ceremony is held annually in Stockholm on December 10th, the anniversary of the death of founder Alfred Nobel.
