The Embassy of Sweden in Tokyo is seeking a Political and Economic Affairs Officer to strengthen the Embassy’s policy analysis and to assist in handling bilateral contacts and visits.
The focus is directed towards economic security, industrial policy and foreign and security policy. The position is full-time, with a starting date as soon as possible. Application deadline: February 11.
About the role
This is a combined analytical and operational role. The successful candidate will monitor and analyze key political and economic developments in Japan, actively feed analysis into the Embassy’s work and assist in bilateral contacts and visits. The position is shared between the Political and Economic Sections and includes practical support to the Defense Attaché Office.
We are looking for a proactive generalist who takes initiative, builds networks, works collaboratively across teams, and is comfortable combining analytical work with hands-on tasks such as visits, events and delegations when needed.
Key responsibilities
· Analyze and report on developments in Japanese politics, economic security, industrial and foreign policy
· Identify emerging trends of relevance to Sweden and the EU and produce written analysis of these
· Build and maintain networks with Japanese government, think tanks, academia and industry
· Integrate analysis into the Embassy’s operational activities, including delegations and events, and support these where needed
· Support the Defense Attaché Office as needed
Qualifications and profile
· Academic exam in either economics, political science, international relations or another relevant field
· At least 5 years work experience in a similar position
· Strong analytical and writing skills
· Good understanding of Japanese politics and policymaking
· Professional proficiency in English and Japanese
· Ability to work independently and as part of a small, cross-functional team
· Flexibility and readiness to take on a broad range of tasks
· Knowledge of Sweden or Swedish language is an asset, but not required
