Study+Work in Sweden began in 2024 and has been held in Tokyo, Osaka, Fukuoka, and Sapporo. This will be the third time it's held in Tokyo. The event aims to convey the appeal of studying in Sweden and, through Swedish companies in Japan, introduce the areas in which Sweden excels in industry and the Swedish work culture.
Furthermore, this event aims to provide a platform for prospective students, alumni, job seekers, and Swedish companies to network and exchange information.

Location:Tsubame Terrace, at Institute of Science Tokyo
The event will be divided into three main parts: the first will be individual consultations, the second will be presentations by alumni and companies, and the third will be a networking event.
Target audience: People who returned from Sweden in 2026, people who have studied at a Swedish university, people who are considering studying in Sweden, people who want to work for a Swedish company, companies and university staff looking for talented personnel.

15:00 Registration starts
Each university, company, and organization will have a booth set up. Alumni will be available to answer your questions at the university booths. The Swedish Embassy booth will provide brochures and scholarship information for Swedish universities.

"Beyond Degree Studies in Sweden: My Seventh Year in Sweden" by Makoto Shigei
When I first came to Sweden, my plan was simple: to begin by spending two years here as a master's student.
After graduating from Hokkaido University, I moved to Sweden in 2019 with the support of a Rotary Foundation scholarship to study at the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences, SLU. At the time, I was interested in pursuing an international career, but I had never lived outside Japan. I therefore saw the two-year master's programme as an opportunity to experience studying and living abroad before deciding what should come next.
During those two years, I found that I enjoyed both academic life and living in Sweden, which led me to continue with a PhD at Uppsala University. That decision opened the door to a rewarding but demanding journey. Doctoral studies taught me not only how to conduct independent research, but also how challenging an academic career can be. Along the way, I dealt with self-doubt and imposter syndrome, difficulties in communicating with supervisors, and the uncertainty of deciding what kind of researcher I wanted to become.
At the same time, I became increasingly interested in how research could contribute more directly to society. Through collaboration with industry, exposure to developments in European water policy, and professional activities such as the Young Water Professionals network, I began to see career possibilities beyond a traditional university-based academic path. I realized that I wanted to work at the intersection of research and practical implementation, where scientific knowledge could be translated into solutions for real environmental challenges.
Today, I work as a process engineer and researcher at IVL Swedish Environmental Research Institute. I contribute to applied research and pilot projects related to sustainable water and wastewater treatment, working with municipalities, companies, universities, and international partners. Working professionally in Swedish has also changed how I see my role and future in Sweden.
In this talk, I will reflect on my journey into its seventh year, from master's studies and doctoral research to job searching and applied research. By sharing the opportunities, difficulties, networks, and decisions that shaped this path, I hope to offer a realistic perspective on degree studies in Sweden and the different careers that may follow.

Munters is a Swedish climate solutions company and a global leader in dehumidification and air treatment technologies. Throughout her career in multinational companies, she has worked primarily in finance and business leadership. Her journey from Finance to Managing Director has given me a broad perspective on both strategy and operations. As a female leader in a global organization, She value collaboration, diversity, and continuous learning. She looks forward to sharing her experiences and discussing the opportunities that international careers can offer.

She has more than 15 years of experience in international higher education at Swedish universities, with expertise in international academic partnerships, international student recruitment, and global student mobility. She is passionate about connecting students from around the world with study opportunities in Sweden and fostering international collaboration. In this session, she will introduce KTH and share insights into the educational and career opportunities available to international students in Sweden.

After graduating from The Jikei University School of Medicine, she completed my postgraduate training in obstetrics and gynecology at the University of Tokyo and became a board-certified obstetrician and gynecologist in Japan. Inspired by study abroad experiences in Germany and the United States during medical school, she decided to pursue fields that were not yet widely established in Japan. She subsequently earned master's degrees in aesthetic medicine in the United Kingdom and nutrition science at Karolinska Institutet in Sweden. She then joined the Swedish startup SKINOME, where she was involved in clinical research on the skin microbiome. She currently practice as both an obstetrician-gynecologist and an aesthetic physician, with a particular focus on comprehensive women's healthcare. In addition to her clinical work, she collaborate with companies in Japan, the United States, and Sweden.
Dr. Takuya Iwaki
School of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, KTH Royal Institute of Technology, 2011.08-2012.01 (Exchange program), 2016.05-2021.03 (PhD program)
He studied control engineering and aerospace engineering at the Royal Institute of Technology (KTH) in Sweden as an exchange student from 2011 to 2012. After working in industry, he returned to KTH in 2016 and received his Ph.D. in 2021. His research specializes in control theory. He is currently engaged in R&D on spacecraft control at a research institution in Japan.
Ms. Miharu Onoda

During her bachelor’s in Economics at Hitotsubashi university, she did my exchange study at Lund university. she learned Swedish economic history, and became interested in Sweden’s regional policies. After her bachelor’s, she started my master’s study in Human Geography at Lund university, where I strengthened her interests toward Sweden’s regional planning with a focus on built environment, innovation, and mobility. She graduated this June, and later started working as a tax consultant in Japan. She is also figuring out a way to pursue the research.
Food and drinks will be provided. The booths from Part 1 will remain set up, allowing you to speak directly with former study abroad students.
