For Swedes in United Kingdom

Book an appointment

Before you visit the Embassy to apply for/renew a passport/ID-card, you must book an appointment and prepare all necessary documentation. The Embassy uses an online booking system in which appointments can be booked up to six months in advance. New passport and national identity card appointments are added to the booking system on an ongoing basis. Appointments may be released several months in advance or at shorter notice, depending on available capacity. Some appointments become available automatically through the booking system, while others are released manually by the Embassy. In addition, cancelled appointments become available for booking once they have been returned to the system by the person cancelling the appointment.

Before visiting the Embassy

Before attending your booked appointment, it is important to make sure you have completed all necessary documentation. The required documentation depends on your errand:

Please ensure that you cancel your appointment if you can no longer attend. That way, someone else can make use of the appointment slot.

Where can I apply for a passport?

You can apply for a passport or ID card at the Embassy in London, another Swedish Embassy, or with the passport police in Sweden. If you apply for a passport in Sweden or another Embassy than London, you can still collect it in the UK. If you want to collect the passport/ID card at one of the consulates in Belfast, Edinburgh och Gibraltar, you must contact the Embassy in London to request it.

Often, it is both quicker and cheaper to apply for a passport in Sweden. More information about how to apply for a passport as a Swedish citizen residing abroad on the Swedish police website.

Frequently asked questions: passports

  • Please find instructions and information here. You cannot book an appointment via email, phone or by visiting the Embassy.

  • You need to bring valid id/passport, complete application forms as well as other necessary documents. Depending on the purpose of your visit, and if you are under 18, this may vary. Find checklists for what you need to do ahead of attending your booked appointment here:

Please go through the checklist carefully to make sure that you have everything you need for your booked appointment to guarantee your application runs smoothly.

  • Each time you apply for a passport, you need to be photographed and register your fingerprints, meaning that you need to be present in person during your application.

Consulates are not equipped with camera stations and are not authorised to issue ordinary passports/national identity cards. However, you can collect your new passport/national identity card from several UK consulates, if you notify the Embassy of this.

  • You can apply for a passport even if your current passport has expired. If your current Swedish passport / ID card is no longer valid, you can bring another valid ID document to prove your identity (British ID cards, including driving licenses, are also accepted).

If your passport has expired and you do not have another valid ID document, you must bring someone with you to your booked appointment who can prove your identity. This person needs to bring a valid ID document and proof of your relationship. An example of this can be a bill stating both of your names, proving that you live together; an employment contract which shows that you are colleagues; or a birth certificate proving your relationship. Please see our full list of who can prove your identity and which documentation is required.

  • You need to present proof of your upcoming trip to Sweden (taking place within two to three days). Bring proof of your flight ticket. You also need to bring all documentation required for ordinary passports:

Provisional passports issued by embassies or consulates are for one-way trips to Sweden only. The provisional passport is printed on paper (A4) and does not contain any biometric data. More information about emergency passports can be found here.

  • British authorities answer questions about entering the UK. Find more information about entry rules for foreign nationals on the UK Government's website.

It is, however, the Embassy's understanding that the British border police at present accept Swedish provisional passports for people who do not require an ETA to enter the UK.

If you require an ETA to enter the UK, you can travel to the UK with a Swedish provisional passport issued by the Swedish Police. These passports contain biometric information needed for when travelling with an ETA.

Provisional passports issued by Swedish embassies do not contain biometric information, and therefore you cannot use an embassy- issued provisional passport to travel to the UK should you require an ETA to enter the UK.

However, embassy- issued provisional passports can be used to travel from the UK to Sweden.

  • If you are a Swedish citizen and you are travelling to Sweden, you are able to travel until the last day of validity of your Swedish passport. If you use a British passport when travelling, your passport needs to be valid for at least three (3) months after your planned return trip from Sweden.

For accurate and up-to-date information about entry rules to the UK, please visit the UK Government's website.
