The Embassy of Sweden in Washington, DC, is seeking candidates for a fixed-term employment of three years as a Congressional Liaison Officer.

The primary objective of the Congressional Liaison Officer will be to facilitate and promote stronger links between the Embassy of Sweden and the United States Congress by creating greater awareness in the U.S. of Swedish priorities and by actively pursuing opportunities for deeper cooperation.

The position offers a chance to be a part of shaping Swedish-U.S. relations within a bilateral and multilateral context in areas ranging from security and foreign policy to economy and culture.

Job description and scope of responsibilities

  • Do independent analysis, evaluation and reporting of political events in Congress,
  • Develop and deepen networks with Members of Congress and their staff,
  • Design outreach strategies to promote co-operation between the Embassy and Congress,
  • Develop and deepen networks with other relevant actors and institutions such as think-tanks, Library of Congress, the Congressional Research Service, academia and media,
  • Assist in organizing programs for incoming high-level visits from Sweden,
  • Assist in organizing congressional delegations and staffer delegations travelling to Sweden, and act as a liaison with the US Embassy in Stockholm for visits from Congress to Sweden.

Requirements and skills

  • Minimum BA/BS college-level degree,
  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a group,
  • Results-driven and action-oriented,
  • Ability to plan and think strategically,
  • Ability to handle flexible working hours and tight deadlines,
  • Good communication skills orally as well as in writing,
  • Knowledge of and experience from Sweden, as well as the Swedish language, is a preference but not a requirement,
  • Prior experience in congressional and political work is a preference but not a requirement,
  • Applicants must be either U.S. citizens or permanent residents with the legal right to work in the United States.

The Congressional Liaison officer will be placed directly under the Ambassador and work cross-sectorally to the benefit of all sections of the Embassy.

The position is a full-time fixed-term employment for three years with a three month trial employment.

The salary is set on an individual basis within the range 7400-8000 USD. The position is locally employed by the Embassy (not the Ministry for Foreign Affairs in Sweden). The Embassy offers attractive pension and health benefits, as well as 28 annual vacation days.
