Sweden was the first country in the world to appoint a global ambassador for human rights, in the 1980s. Respect for, and the protection of, human rights is both a cornerstone and a starting point for Sweden. The Ambassador for Human Rights, Democracy and the Rule of Law represents Swedish policy in international organisations and in contacts with other countries. The ambassador also acts as a bridge between the Swedish Ministry for Foreign Affairs and civil society, both in Sweden and internationally.
