NEWSThe Swedish Election for the European Parliament will be held on June 9, 2024. From abroad you can choose to vote by postal mail, or to vote early in person (förtidsrösta) at different voting locations throughout the U.S. The first date for early voting is May 16.
All eligible voters who are abroad during the voting period may vote from abroad. This applies to both those living abroad on a permanent basis and those who are abroad temporarily.
Please keep in mind that you cannot vote on Election Day while abroad. Only early voting (förtidsröstning) is possible outside of Sweden. The first date for early voting is May 16, 2024.

No, you can vote without a voting card, both by mail and in person as long as you meet the eligibility requirements below. If you have not received the material for voting by mail by April 25 (which is the first day for voting by mail), you can order from the Election Authority, from your municipality, or from any consulate/embassy in the U.S.
Yes, you can - as long as you meet the eligibility requirements below. And your vote counts as a re-registration for another 10 years.
Please bring valid ID (e.g. passport or driver license) and your voting card to vote in person. (You may vote even if you do not have a voting card as long as you meet the eligibility criteria below.) You must know your Swedish personal ID number (personnummer) to be able to vote.
Swedish citizens who have never been been registered as residing in Sweden (folkbokförda) are not eligible to vote.
Material for voting by mail, including voting cards, is automatically sent to eligible voters abroad and should have reached all by April 25. The Election Authority uses the information in the Electoral Register (röstlängden), which is your address as registered with the Tax Agency (folkbokföringen). To keep your address abroad updated please use the form “Ny adress/röstlängd för utvandrad, Anmälan (SKV 7842)” (in Swedish only).
You can also request material for voting by mail directly from the Election Authority or from your municipality, or by sending an email to any consulate/embassy in the U.S. Do not forget to include your complete postal mailing address! You cannot mail your ballot any earlier than April 25!
Your vote must reach the Election Authority by June 8 to be sure to be counted as a vote in this year’s election.
Swedish citizens who reside in another EU member state may choose to vote in that country instead by adding their name to that country's Electoral Register.
Swedes residing abroad remain in the Electoral Register (röstlängden) for ten years after their emigration is recorded in the Tax Agency’s population register (folkbokföringen).
After ten years, a notification form (“Ny adress/röstlängd för utvandrad, Anmälan (SKV 7842) must be submitted to the Tax Agency to remain in the Electoral Register for an additional ten years. Voting in an election is considered a request to remain in the Electoral Register for the following ten years.
