41st session of the UPR Working Group - Review of Indonesia

Recommendations by Sweden delivered by Mr Fredrik Nivaeus, Minister Counselor, Deputy Permanent Representative

President,

Sweden welcomes the progress made by Indonesia regarding the policy framework for human rights through the adoption of the “National Action Plan for Human Rights (2021-25)”. However, following up recommendations made by Sweden during the last cycle, we remain concerned by the negative development regarding the situation for LGBTIQ persons, restrictions of the right to freedom of religion and stress the importance of continuing the work to abolish the death penalty.

Sweden would like to make the following recommendations:

  1. Guarantee legal protection against discrimination for LGBTIQ persons.
  2. Revise national legislation to recognize and protect the right to freedom of religion or belief, or non-belief in accordance with Article 18 in ICCPR.
  3. Ratify the Optional Protocol to the Convention against Torture (OPCAT), and the Second Optional Protocol to the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR), in order to abolish the death penalty.

Thank you
