UPR 38th session - Statement by Sweden in the review of Singapore

12 May 2021

Delivered by: Ms Clara Molin, First Secretary

President,

Sweden welcomes Singapore’s efforts to improve the situation for migrant workers and the initiative 2021 – the year of celebrating SG women. Sweden remains deeply concerned about the continued use of the death penalty and corporal punishment. Sweden would also like to encourage further efforts to end discrimination based on gender, sexual orientation and gender identity and make the following recommendations:

  1. Take concrete steps towards abolition of the death penalty and corporal punishment.

  2. Include gender as a ground for discrimination in the national law against discrimination.

  3. Repeal the criminalization, as stipulated in the penal code, of consensual male-to-male sexual relations.

Thank you
