Statement by Sweden in the interactive dialogue with the High Commissioner on the oral update on Ukraine

01 Oct 2020

45th session of the Human Rights Council. Statement delivered by Ambassador Anna Jardfelt.

Mr. Vice President,

Sweden thanks the OHCHR for the update and for the recent reports and aligns itself with the EU's statement.

While welcoming the renewed efforts for cease-fire in Eastern Ukraine and the reduction of casualties in the past months, we remain deeply concerned over the conflict's continued negative impact on human rights. We stress the importance of full implementation of the Minsk agreements, underlining Russia's responsibility in this regard.

We also stress the need to re-establish the freedom of movement over the contact line to ease the hardships of the civilian population.

The lack of respect for the rule of law and human rights, including the right to a fair trial in the so called DNR and LNR is unacceptable. So are the human rights violations and abuses, including those related to legal proceedings in illegally annexed Crimea.

We reiterate our non-recognition and condemnation of Russia's illegal annexation of Crimea, and our condemnation of Russia's aggression in eastern Ukraine. We call on Russia, to uphold its obligations under international law. All parties must respect and ensure respect for international humanitarian law.

We express support for the UN Human Rights Monitoring Mission and call on all parties to follow the recommendations from the OHCHR.

Thank you.
