Statement by Sweden in the General Debate on Item 10

05 Oct 2020

45th session of the Human Rights Council. Statement delivered by Ambassador Anna Jardfelt.

Mr Vice President,

Sweden fully aligns itself with the EU.

Sweden values the work of the OHCHR in providing technical assistance and capacity building.

Sweden is seriously concerned about recent developments in Cambodia with a number of arrests of human rights defenders. We reiterate the need for concrete changes regarding political participation, the right to freedom of expression and opinion, as well as to association and assembly. Sweden urges Cambodia to reopen democratic space, including for civil society and media.

Regarding Yemen, Sweden strongly supports the efforts of the National Commission of Inquiry to implement its mandate, as well as the efforts of the Group of Eminent International and Regional Experts. We welcome the assistance provided by the OHCHR to the National Commission and call upon all parties to implement the recommendations in the report. We reiterate the need for an inclusive political process, with the full, equal and meaningful participation of women

We reaffirm our full support for Georgia's sovereignty and territorial integrity within its internationally recognized borders. Free, fair and transparent elections, an independent judiciary and gender equality are key to continued democratic development. While commending Georgia's efforts, we encourage further reforms in these areas, as well as ensuring the full enjoyment of human rights for LGBTI-persons.

I thank you.
