Statement on behalf of the Nordic Baltic countries (NB8) delivered by H.E. Ms Maria Malmer Stenergard, Minister for Foreign Affairs of Sweden, at the 63rd session of the Human Rights Council in Geneva on 2 October 2026
Mr President,
I have the honour to deliver this statement on behalf of the Nordic-Baltic States.
Every day, Russia chooses to continue its brutal war of aggression and deliberate attacks against civilians and civilian infrastructure in Ukraine. It shows that it is not interested in peace.
The mounting reports of Russia’s violations of international humanitarian law and international human rights law is appalling.
Repeatedly, we learn about the horrific nature of Russia’s violations: torture of civilians and prisoners of war. Systematic sexual violence against detainees. Forcible transfer and deportation of Ukrainian children.
We will not stay silent about these crimes.
The Nordic-Baltic States reaffirm our unwavering solidarity with the Ukrainian people, and our steadfast support for Ukraine’s independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity.
We will continue to demand full accountability for the crimes committed in the context of Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine, and we urge all countries to join this call for justice.
Thank you.
