Theme: From gender stereotypes to structural discrimination: strengthening the Human Rights Council’s response.
Statement on behalf of the Nordic Baltic countries (NB8) delivered by H.E. Mr Magnus Hellgren, Permanent Representative of Sweden to the UN, at the 63rd session of the Human Rights Council in Geneva on 29 September 2026
Mr. President,
I have the honour to speak on behalf of the Nordic-Baltic States.
We welcome the annual discussion on the integration of a gender perspective throughout the work of the Human Rights Council, a topic which requires our continued attention.
Despite important progress towards gender equality, deeply rooted gender stereotypes continue to limit opportunities, expectations, and outcomes for persons around the world. They influence access to education, employment, political participation, health services, and justice, often particularly affecting women’s, girls’ and LGBTIQ persons enjoyment of human rights.
Achieving full gender equality requires efforts to challenge gender stereotypes and harmful social norms across society. Governments, civil society, and the private sector all have an important role in driving change.
At the same time, new and emerging technologies like AI are transforming the way information is produced and shared. While these tools offer significant opportunities, they can also reinforce existing biases, stereotypes and also violate a person’s privacy and human rights.

From a human rights perspective, what practical measures can be used to address gender stereotypes in the digital sphere and promote equality and non-discrimination for all?
