Statement on behalf of the Nordic Baltic countries (NB8) delivered by H.E. Mr Magnus Hellgren, Permanent Representative of Sweden to the UN, at the 63rd session of the Human Rights Council in Geneva on 7 September 2026
Mr President,
The Nordic and Baltic countries thank the FFM for its report. The Mission plays a critical role in documenting violations and abuses, preserving evidence and laying the groundwork for accountability. Renewal of its mandate and its access to Sudan remain essential.
The conflict in Sudan continues to inflict devastating suffering on civilians and exacerbate humanitarian needs. The FFM finds that external support is sustaining military operations and enhancing the capabilities of the parties to the conflict. We therefore call for an immediate end to external financing and support that enables the continuation of the conflict.
The mission documented attacks affecting civilians, hospitals, humanitarian workers, schools, markets and displacement sites, including attacks that may amount to war crimes. Reports of ethnically motivated violence, arbitrary detention, torture and starvation as a method of warfare is alarming. Of particular concern are reports of widespread and systematic sexual violence against women and girls.
We strongly urge all parties to agree to a sustained ceasefire, protect civilians and humanitarian workers, and comply with international human rights law and IHL. Safe and unhindered humanitarian access must be ensured.
There can be no sustainable peace in Sudan without accountability. What actions are needed to end sexual and gender-based violence as a method of warfare and ensure accountability?
