HRC62 - NB8 - Annual Discussion on Women’s Rights (Panel 2)

Statement on behalf of the Nordic Baltic countries (NB8) delivered by H.E. Mr Magnus Hellgren, Permanent Representative of Sweden to the UN, at the 62nd session of the Human Rights Council in Geneva on 24 June 2026.

Thank you Chair,

I deliver this statement on behalf of the Nordic Baltic countries.

The International Day of Women in Diplomacy underscores that sustainable peace requires women’s full, equal and meaningful participation at all levels of decision-making. Despite existing frameworks, progress remains uneven, and systemic barriers continue to constrain women’s leadership in peace and security processes.

Our international human rights commitments provide a solid foundation for inclusive governance, based on equality, accountability and participation. They reinforce the implementation of Women, Peace and Security agenda by affirming that durable, long-lasting peace depends on women’s substantive involvement.

We must keep up our efforts to ensure women’s and girls’ full enjoyment of human rights. Unfortunately, we are witnessing unacceptable attempts to undermine gender equality, as well as shrinking civic space, with an alarming increase of threats, both online and offline, against women human rights defenders and peacebuilders. Addressing these challenges requires strengthened protection and ensured participation of women - with real influence and decision-making power across all stages of conflict resolution and peace building.

Esteemed panellists, what good practices have proven effective in increasing women’s representation and influence in diplomatic services and negotiations?

Thank you.
