Statement delivered by Sweden on behalf of the Nordic‑Baltic States (NB8)
Special Rapporteur,
The Nordic-Baltic States thank you for your updates and for your contribution to the work of the HRC.
Throughout your mandate, you have been carrying the human rights torch high and with a clear voice.
We remain deeply disturbed by the human rights crisis in Myanmar.
Five years after the coup, reports of serious human rights violations and abuses persist. The civilian population suffers from air strikes, mass arrests, violence, including sexual and gender-based violence, and torture. Humanitarian aid is obstructed, leaving millions in acute food insecurity and without adequate access to essential services.
Violence and criminal activity spill across borders, undermining human rights by fueling displacement, exploitation, and impunity across the region.
This must end and perpetrators held to account.
We call on all parties, in particular the Myanmar military, to take immediate and meaningful measures to protect civilians and allow full and unhindered humanitarian access, in line with the ASEAN Five-Point Consensus.
Under the recent military run purported elections, conditions for free and fair elections were not met. Genuine, inclusive dialogue is still needed.
Special rapporteur,
You call for coordinated action by the international community. What should be the main priorities?
Thank you.
