Statement delivered by Sweden on behalf of the Nordic‑Baltic States (NB8)
Thank you, President.
On behalf of the Nordic-Baltic countries, I want to thank the High Commissioner for his update and for continuing to draw attention to the deepening human rights crisis in Myanmar.
Widespread violence and grave human rights violations and abuses persist across the country. The humanitarian situation continues to deteriorate at an alarming pace. Civilians, including human rights defenders, journalists and civil society, are at risk of arrests and imprisonments. Many face persecution. This must end, and those responsible must be held accountable, including through international courts.
The military has recently sought international legitimacy through elections, but the essential elements of free and fair elections consistent with international standards were not met. We emphasise the need for continued support to actors working towards a peaceful, democratic and inclusive transition process, ensuring transparency, accountability and respect for human rights.
We once again call on the Myanmar military to immediately end all forms of violence, including sexual and gender-based violence, aerial attacks, mass killings and persecution. We urge all parties to fully adhere to international law and to ensure safe, rapid and unhindered humanitarian access.
High Commissioner, considering the military’s recently purported elections, how can the international community best support the people of Myanmar to embark on a path towards a genuine democratic process?
Thank you.
