In October 2014, Sweden became the first country in the world to launch a feminist foreign policy. This means applying a systematic gender equality perspective throughout the whole foreign policy agenda.
The background to the Drive for Democracy is a growing concern about the threats and challenges to democracy. The initiative aims to respond to these threats and the Drive for Democracy extends across all aspects of Sweden's foreign policy, including security, development and trade policy.
Sweden will continue to do all it can to be a strong voice and actor for democratic development in the world. We are now stepping up our efforts to protect democracy. The Drive for Democracy is a key focus area for the Swedish Government, and we will work intensely in the coming years to provide much needed support to democracy's institutions, to its processes, and to its defenders.
