Sweden Introduces New Family Immigration Rules from 1 October 2026

New regulations on family-based immigration came into force in Sweden on 1 October 2026, following approval by the Swedish Parliament. The changes introduce stricter requirements for sponsors in Sweden, including a higher financial maintenance threshold for those seeking to bring family members to the country.

At the same time, the reforms provide greater protection for young adults, giving them enhanced opportunities to remain in Sweden with their parents. A temporary provision also allows certain individuals to apply for a different residence permit without leaving Sweden.

The new rules affect both people applying for residence permits based on family ties and those sponsoring family members. Specific provisions vary depending on the residence status of the family member already living in Sweden.
