New Development Cooperation Strategy

Since 2012, Sweden has been a strong development partner to Liberia and has implemented several development strategies through the Embassy of Sweden in Monrovia. The new strategy, which is aligned to Liberia’s current development strategy - The Pro-Poor Agenda for Prosperity and Development (PAPD), runs from 2021 to 2025.

The strategy has a total value of 1 800 000 000 SEK and focuses on democracy, human rights, the rule of law and gender equality; peaceful and inclusive societies, inclusive economic development; and environment, climate, and the sustainable use of natural resources.

It is jointly implemented by the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (Sida) and the Folke Bernadotte Academy (FBA).

The strategy aims to contribute to the following objectives:

  1. Strengthened conditions for human rights, democracy and the rule of law, including reduced corruption
  2. Greater gender equality, including reduced gender-based violence, and access to, and respect for, sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR)
  3. Strengthened conditions for sustainable peace and social cohesion
  4. Strengthened conditions for productivity and access to domestic and international markets
  5. Increased opportunities for productive employment and decent work
  6. Sustainable management and use of natural resources, including biodiversity
  7. Greater access to renewable energy and increased energy efficiency
  8. Reduced climate impact and increased resilience to climate change
