The Consulate General must first request a coordination number from the Swedish Tax Agency before a passport can be issued to a newborn (or a person born outside of Sweden applying for a passport for the first time). Currently, the Swedish Tax Agency handles many population registrations with the consequence that the waiting time for allocation of a coordination number is around eight weeks. The same applies in cases where a coordination number must be renewed due to inactivation (coordination numbers are deactivated every fifth year).
The total application time for passports for persons with a coordination number can for the moment be up to 3 months. Persons with a coordination are therefore encouraged to apply for a passport in time.
