To make ID and passport control more accessible for student and work permit applicants of visa-exempt citizens residing in Hong Kong and Macau, the Swedish Migration Agency has exceptionally decided to conduct a mobile ID and passport control in Hong Kong on 24-25 June 2025. The ID and passport checks will be conducted by authorised staff from the Embassy of Sweden in Bangkok.

To apply for a passport for a child born abroad, the child first must have been assigned a coordinaiton number (samordningsnummer).

You need an extract from the Swedish Tax Agency (Skatteverket) where your current name is specified. A registration certificate can be ordered through the Swedish Tax Agency either by phone or by visiting their website.
To be able to renew your Swedish driver's licence you must be a permanent resident in Sweden or have studied in Sweden for at least six months. If you are registered in Sweden but currently abroad due to studies, work or a longer visit you are also able to renew your Swedish driver's licence and pick it up at the consulate. You are welcome to contact us to schedule an appointment to receive the necessary application from the Swedish Transport Agency (Transportstyrelsen) which needs to be sent in as an original document for the renewal.

In order to join your family or close relative in Sweden, you must have a residence permit. Your application for residence permit should be finalised before entering Sweden.
It is the Swedish Migration Agency that considers your right to a residence permit. For a full description of what rules apply, please visit their website.
If you are going to study in Sweden for longer than three months, you must have a residence permit. Your application should be finalised before entering Sweden. If you will be studying for less than three months, you will instead need a visa unless you’re exempted from the visa requirement for entry into Sweden.

Yes, you can make trips to other countries within Schengen, but only for travelling purposes and not for the purpose of settling down.

Holders of Hong Kong SAR, Macau SAR or BNO passports do not need a Visa for visiting Sweden as a tourist. You may stay for a maximum of 90 days. For a full list of nationals requiring a Visa to visit Sweden, please see the Swedish government's updated list.

The Swedish passport does however require an expiration date at least one month longer than the planned visit to Hong Kong or Macau. For example, a stay in Hong Kong for two weeks would require an eligible passport for at least six weeks.
