Applicants from Pakistan

Citizens of Pakistan and persons residing in Pakistan who have been instructed by the Swedish Migration Agency to book an appointment for an interview, biometrics or passport check in applications for a residence permit due to family ties, studies or work are referred to the Embassy of Sweden in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. This also applies if you want to apply for a visitor’s permit to visit Sweden for more than 90 days. It is the sole responsibility of the applicant to arrange for a visa, if required by Ethiopia. The Embassy of Sweden will not be able to assist or give information in any matters regarding entry in Ethiopia. The waiting time can change quickly and you are advised to not book any tickets before having received a confirmed appointment from the Embassy of Sweden in Addis Ababa.

For more information on how to book an appointment and contact information, see Applicants from Pakistan - how to book an appointment at the Embassy of Sweden in Addis Abeba

When booking an appointment in Addis Ababa, kindly note that it is of utmost importance that you provide case or dossier number, full names and date of birth of all applicants as well as information on spoken languages. It is not necessary to contact the Swedish Migration Agency or the Embassy of Sweden in Islamabad to have your case moved in case you have previously been instructed to book an appointment there.

After the visit at the Embassy of Sweden in Addis Ababa, the case will be sent back to the Swedish Migration Agency for processing and decision. The embassy can not answer any questions on the estimated waiting time. In case your application is granted, a residence permit card will be produced as a proof of your right to travel to Sweden. It is necessary to have the residence permit card in order to travel to Sweden. The card will automatically be sent to the Embassy of Sweden in Addis Ababa. If you wish for your residence permit card to be sent to the Swedish Migration Agency in Sweden and picked up by a person to whom you give a power of attorney, such as a family member, this has to be clearly stated at the visit at the Embassy of Sweden in Addis Ababa, before you give your finger prints. Residence permit cards can not be sent to the Embassy of Sweden in Islamabad. It generally takes 3-4 weeks before a residence permit card arrives in Addis Ababa after a decision is made. If your card is ordered to Addis Ababa, you will receive information on this by email when the card arrives in the embassy.

Schengen visas applications

Embassy of Sweden in Nairobi is, from 8 February 2022, responsible for handling Schengen visa applications for travels to Sweden and Norway from Ethiopia. You need to submit your application in good time before travelling. According to article 9 section 1 in the visa code, EU 2019/1155, you should apply not less than 15 days before the planned visit begins. The 15 days is counted from when the application is received by the Embassy of Sweden in Nairobi. Consequently, you must calculate with the transportation time when planning for your submission.

A late application might be refused or in some cases a request for a new flight booking, insurance and even new invitation will be sent. A request for new documents is likely to increase the handling time further.

The normal transportation time one way is 2 days for Ethiopia to Nairobi.

The Embassy should handle your application within 15 days (if the application is admissible), counted from when the Embassy has received the application. If an application is not complete or if an interview or document verification is needed the handling time can be extended up to 45 days.

Inquiries about Schengen visas should be addressed to the Embassy of Sweden in Nairobi by email (ambassaden.nairobi-visum@gov.se) or phone. The Embassy´s phone hours are Monday and Wednesdays 2-3 pm and Fridays 10-11 am local Kenyan time. See the Embassy´s Website for holidays and such Contact - Sweden Abroad . The Swedish Embassy in Addis Abeba is no longer handling Schengen visas and consequently your email will be sent to the Embassy in Nairobi. Inquiry by phone directed to the Embassy in Addis Abeba will not be answered (you will only be referred to the Embassy in Nairobi). During the peak season (May-July and November-December) you need to wait patiently for a reply.
