As of June 16th 2025, The Embassy of Sweden in Washington D.C. will also handle matters concerning residence and work permits for Canadians to Sweden on behalf of the Swedish Migration Agency.

A Schengen visa is required for individuals of certain nationalities who wish to visit the Schengen countries for up to 90 days. A Schengen visa can be issued for a maximum of 90 days. Canadian citizens and most citizens of North-, Central and South American countries do not need visas to visit Sweden if the visit is 90 days or less. Applications for Schengen visas are submitted to the external service provider VFS Global and will be processed by the Embassy of Sweden in Washington D.C..
VFS Global's website, www.vfsglobal.com, contains all information on required documentation, fees, processing time and on how to book an appointment for submission of an application.
Once your card arrives at the embassy, you will receive an automated email notification.
If you provided your biometrics (photo and fingerprints) at an embassy, the card is usually delivered to the embassy about 4 weeks after your visit.
However, the card will not be sent out earlier than 6 weeks before the start date of your permit.
Canadian citizens may travel to Sweden with the approval e-mail from the Migration Agency. Once in Sweden, you can provide biometrics at a Migration Agency office to receive your residence permit card.

If the Swedish Migration Agency has instructed you to schedule an interview, you must contact the Embassy in Washington D.C. at visa.washington@gov.se. Interviews can still be conducted in Ottawa, but applicants may also choose to attend the interview in Washington, D.C. Please specify your preferred location (Ottawa or Washington, D.C.) in your email.
