If a Schengen visa has been approved

To avoid problems or extra costs when travelling to the Schengen area it is recommended to check:

  • that the passport number is correctly written on the visa sticker,
  • the validity period of the visa, including the number of days,
  • that the applicant’s name is spelled correctly,
  • how many entries have been granted to the Schengen area (one, two or multiple).

If the information on the visa sticker appears to be incorrect, please contact the Embassy of Sweden.

How to read the visa sticker

  • if granted one entry: A period of grace of 15 days is normally added to a Schengen visa, meaning that the time is 15 days longer than what was applied for, but the visa is only valid for the number of days stated on the sticker,
  • if granted a multiple entry visa: A Schengen visa is valid for up to 90 days during a 180-day period. The days can be used during the period that is indicated on the visa sticker.

Entering the Schengen area

A granted visa does not automatically mean that an applicant is allowed to enter the Schengen area. Entry checks are always carried out at the border, for example to ensure that the applicant's travel plans are consistent with the submitted visa application. A border check may result in a refusal of entry. A decision to revoke a visa will be stored in the Schengen Visa Information System (VIS), which may affect future visa applications.
