What is Swedish citizenship and how do I know if I have Swedish citizenship?

You can become a Swedish citizen through:

  • birth
  • adoption
  • legalization (marriage of parents)
  • application (naturalisation)
  • registration (children, young people aged 18–20 and citizens of Finland, Denmark, Norway and Iceland)

For more information about the requirements and new updates visit the website New rules for Swedish citizenship from 6 June 2026 – Swedish Migration Agency

Citizenship is a legally binding relationship between a state and an individual (citizen) either automatically at birth or after registration or an application. Only those who are Swedish citizens have the right to have a Swedish passport. A Swedish citizen has an unconditional right to reside in Sweden.

If you are unsure whether you are a Swedish citizen, you can apply for a declaration of citizenship.
