Welcome to the Embassy of Sweden in Damascus, Syria
Sweden established diplomatic relations with Syria shorty after independence in 1946. Since 1974, Sweden has an Embassy in Damascus and Syria opened an Embassy in Stockholm in 2001.
Due to the worsened security situation in Syria, the Swedish Ministry for Foreign Affairs decided on 29 March 2012 to reduce the scope of activities and the number of staff at the Embassy of Sweden in Damascus and the Embassy was relocated to Beirut. On 16 August 2026, the Embassy resumed its diplomatic activities in Damascus.
The Embassy of Sweden in Damascus is not open to the public.
Consular assistance for Swedish citizens in Syria is handled by the Embassy of Sweden in Beirut. Syrian citizens that wish to apply for visas are referred to the Embassy of Sweden in Amman. Any other migration-related matters for Syrians are referred to the Swedish Embassies in Abu Dhabi, Amman, Cairo, Riyadh, or to the Consulate General in Istanbul.
In Syria, where a travel advisory has been issued against all travel, one should be aware that they bear a great deal of personal responsibility and that the Ministry for Foreign Affairs ability to provide consular assistance is extremely limited.
