Filmpremiere: “Hilma” at Cinématte, Bern (25 September)

12 Sep 2023

The film “Hilma” about the mystical artist Hilma af Klint by director Lasse Hallström is part of the series "NEW SWEDISH FILMS". Also present will be Julia Voss: The art historian and journalist is the author of a biography about Hilma af Klint.

Large, radical and ahead of her time - Hilma af Klint created more than 1000 paintings, sketches and watercolors and revolutionized painting. Even before Kandinsky or Mondrian, she painted abstract works that impressed with their colors and shapes. She was a woman of great freedom and determination, who consciously defied the rules of the male-dominated art world, and she was aware that she was ahead of her time: at the age of seventy, she decreed that her paintings should not be seen until 20 years after her death. After being overlooked and remaining unknown as a pioneer of abstract painting until after her death in 1944, an exhibition at the Guggenheim Museum in 2019 dedicated to her work became her first major international solo exhibition. She revolutionized the art world and changed art history.
