New Entry/Exit System (EES) in the EU from October 2025
Starting 12 October 2025, the EU will introduce a new Entry/Exit System (EES). This system will affect travellers from outside the EU who visit the Schengen Area for short stays.
What is EES?
The EES is an electronic system that will register the following information for non-EU citizens:
Data from travel documents (passport, etc.)
Date of entry and exit
Biometric data (fingerprints, photograph, etc.)
All personal data will be collected and processed in accordance with EU data protection rules.
Who is affected?
The system applies to non-EU citizens travelling to Sweden and other Schengen states for short stays (e.g. as tourists). It does not apply to people holding residence permits or those travelling for long-term stays requiring specific permits.
When will the system be introduced?
EES will be launched on 12 October 2025, with a gradual roll-out across the Schengen Area.
At border controls, the system will record the traveller’s details and biometric data at entry and exit.
Why is EES being introduced?
The purpose of the system is to make border controls more efficient and to enhance security within the Schengen Area. It will also help prevent overstays and improve the management of border crossings — while ensuring that strict data protection standards are maintained.
Travel to EuropeImportant update for non-EU nationals travelling for a short stay to 29 European countries.
As of 12 October 2025, the Entry/Exit System will gradually record:
• data from the travel document
• travel dates
• biometric data
In line with EU data protection rules.
