The cheapest and quickest way of applying for/renewing your passport/ID-card is to do so during a visit to Sweden. Normal processing time is a week and the fee for a 5 year passport is SEK 350 and for an ID-card SEK 400.
You can apply for your passport in Sweden and collect it at the Embassy in Pretoria or at the Consulate in Cape Town, Gaborone or Windhoek.

The passports and identity cards are equipped with a computer chip which stores the holder's personal data, photo and fingerprints, and are valid for five years.

Swedish citizens who are resident abroad and who need a new passport or identity card can apply in different ways:
Honorary consulates can only accept emergency passport applications, but it is possible to collect your new regular passport or ID-card at a Consulate. Don't forget to bring your old passport when you collect your new one, and please note you will be charged a collection fee of SEK 150.
Everyone applying for a passport or national ID-card must provide proof of identity. The applicant must also provide proof of Swedish citizenship. A newborn/child must be registered and have a Swedish ID-number before they can have a passport. Applicants are advised to consult the staff of the passport authority prior to submitting their application.
The application fee can be paid by Visa or MasterCard at the Embassy when you apply, or by advanced payment to the Embassy of Sweden's bank account (see banking details below). Bring the proof of payment with you when you apply for the passport.

Documents must be presented in originals and when applicable legalised by competent authority.
Applicants 18 years or older who have previously had a Swedish passport must provide proof of identity, as well as proof of Swedish citizenship. They should bring the following documents when applying;
• The old passport, valid or expired (if lost please bring police report).
• If you cannot bring your old passport you must provide a valid photo identification.
• An extract from the Swedish Population Register – if ever resided in Sweden - not older than one month, obtainable from the Swedish Tax Authority, tel. +46 8 564 85160.
• If you were born outside Sweden and never resided there thereafter; you must bring your birth certificate clearly showing the name of your parents.
• Certificate of Swedish citizenship (if the citizenship was acquired by application).
• Certificate of retention of Swedish citizenship after the age of 22 (if you were born outside Sweden and never resided there).
• Original documentation proving South African resident status (valid visa and/or South African id-book) or proof of South African (or other) citizenship (naturalization certificate), or notarized copy of same.
If the applicant became a South African (or other) - excluding automatic naturalisation - citizen before July 1, 2001, documentation from the Swedish Migration Board must be provided to certify that he/she has regained Swedish citizenship.

Children born before April 1, 2015 If the child's father is a Swedish citizen but not the child's mother, and the parents are not married to each other, an application for Swedish citizenship has to be made for the child before one can apply for the Swedish coordination number.
Children born after April 1, 2015 Children born after April 1, 2015 will automatically become Swedish citizen if either parent is a Swedish citizen and can directly request the Swedish coordination number at the embassy or consulate.
Request for Swedish coordination number A Swedish coordination number corresponds to the Swedish personal identity number, but given to children who are born abroad and who were not registered in Sweden. The request for the Swedish coordination number can be made by visiting the embassy or consulate, mother, father and child must be present. The Swedish coordination number is free of charge and the processing time is approximately 8 weeks. Priority is not granted except upon death, war or equivalent. Please note that the Swedish Tax agency (Skatteverket) require a birth notice from the hospital for Swedish mothers who are or have ever been registered in Sweden.
The following documents are required
• Completed form SKV 7750 for names notification, signed by both parents. The form is available at the Embassy, or to download from the Swedish Tax Agency's website. Important information on how to fill out the form is available here.
• Other valid photo ID of the child or bring a passport photograph in color.
• Child's birth certificate, "Unabridged Birth Certificate", in original with an apostile (legalized document).
• A birth notification from the hospital in the original. (If the mother is Swedish and is or has ever been registered in Sweden).
• A copy of parents' marriage certificate if the father is Swedish but not the mother and the baby is born before April 1, 2015.
• Copies of both parents' passports.
• A copy of any decision by the Swedish Migration Board on the retention of Swedish citizenship if there is a risk that the Swedish parent lost his/her Swedish citizenship at the age of 22. Read more here about losing Swedish citizenship.
