State of Emergency (Nödläge)

President Nyusi yesterday proclaimed a state of emergency to take effect from April 1. The state of emergency gives the presidential office the power to decide on extraordinary measures in response to the Corona virus.

In his address to the nation on the evening of March 31, the President declared:

  • Mandatory quarantine for anyone who has recently returned from traveling abroad.
  • Mandatory quarantine if one has been in contact with any of the persons confirmed to be infected.
  • Prohibition of all public or private events (religious, cultural, sporting, political).Exceptions are made for essential government or social work.
  • Restrict people's movement.
  • Limit the crossing of boundaries.

More concrete measures are expected to come.
