Register on the electoral roll by 10 June

Swedish citizens living abroad must register on the electoral roll every ten years. Those who are registered on the electoral roll will receive a voting card and postal voting material during July. The material will be sent to the address listed in the Swedish Tax Agency’s population register.

To register on the electoral roll, fill in the Swedish Tax Agency’s form called ”Ny adress/röstlängd för utvandrad” (SKV 7842). Several people in the same family may register using the same form.

You can also use this form if you want to register a new address, if you for example have moved while living abroad. The form must be printed and signed by hand. You can either mail the form to the Swedish Tax Agency at the address stated on the form, or scan/photograph the form and submit it via the Tax Agency’s contact form. You can find the contact form under “Contact us” on the Swedish Tax Agency’s website.

The form must be received by the Swedish Tax Agency no later than 10 June.

Postal voting from abroad

Anyone who is abroad can also vote by postal voting. You can obtain postal voting material at the Embassy of Sweden in Cairo. The Embassy's contact details can be found at the bottom of the current page.

You can vote by mail from 30 July. If your postal vote arrives too late it will be deemed invalid. Therefore, it is recommended that you send your postal vote as early as possible after 30 July.

The right to vote for Swedish citizens living abroad

As a Swede living abroad, you only have the right to vote in the parliamentary (Riksdag) election. If you are still registered in the Swedish population register, you also have the right to vote in your regional and municipal elections.

If you have emigrated from Sweden, you have the right to vote in the parliamentary election if you:

  • are a Swedish citizen
  • have turned, or will turn, 18 years old no later than election day on 13 September
  • have at some point been registered in the Swedish population register
