Abstract: The lecture of Professor Ulf Hannerz will be an account of four field studies – in a Black American neighbourhood in Washington, DC, in the 1960s, in the Cayman Islands in 1970, in a Nigerian town in the 1970s and 1980s, and a multi-site study of the life and work of newsmedia foreign correspondents in the 1990s. These are fields with different characteristics, at different points in history, requiring different research approaches.
