If you are visiting Sweden and are a citizen of a non-EU country, you may need a visa. A visa is a permit to travel to and stay in a country for a maximum of 90 days. If you intend to stay in Sweden for longer than 90 days you will need a visitor's residence permit.

Visa application

We recommend all applicants to submit their Schengen visa applications through VFS Global. Visit the VFS Global website for the application centre’s address, opening hours and for other practical information. 

Please note that the Embassy of Sweden in Beijing is not authorized to process Schengen Visa applications from non-Chinese nationals who do not have a valid permit for residence in the People´s Republic of China and who lack justification for lodging an application here.

Residents of Mongolia may apply for a Schengen visa to visit Sweden at the VFS Global visa application center in Ulaanbaatar, please visit the VFS Global website for further information.

In order to join your family or relative in Sweden, you must have a residence permit. Residence permit applications can only be submitted at the Migration Agency's website or at the Embassy.

The following application processes at the Embassy require a scheduled appointment:

• Submit a visitor's permit application
• Submit a Schengen visa application

You can visit the Embassy without an appointment, during our opening hours, if you wish to do any of the following:

• Submit a residence permit application (except visitor's permit) 
• Submit a D-visa application
• Record biometrics / Order residence permit card
• Collect decision
• Collect residence permit card
• Submit appeal

To make an appointment for handing in an application for residence permit for visit or book an interview appointment for your residence or work permit, please submit a request for an appointment.

Schengen visa applications may only through prior appointment be submitted at the Embassy of Sweden in Beijing. To make an appointment at the Embassy of Sweden in Beijing for handing in Schengen visa applications you need to send an e-mail to visa.beijing@gov.se with the following information:

1. Name
2. Cellphone number
3. Province of residence
4. Which date you wish to apply

As the Embassy receives many applicants, we might not be able to give you an appointment at your preferred date, but we will do our best to arrange an appointment at our earliest convenience.

If you have already submitted your residence permit application online on the Swedish Migration Agency´s website, then you are able to submit your biometrics at the Embassy of Sweden in Beijing without an appointment.

Please bring your passport for identification when you visit the Embassy during the Migration Section's opening hours.

Applicants will be notified through e-mail when their residence permit card has arrived at the Embassy.

Your residence permit card can be collected either by yourself or by someone else with a power of attorney from you during the Embassy's opening hours. If you collect the card by yourself, you will need to bring your passport. If someone else collects the card on your behalf, he/she must bring the power of attorney, his/her ID card in original and/or passport, and a copy of the ID page in your passport. The power of attorney can be submitted in original or printed copies.

For children under the age of 18, one of the child’s legal guardians must either collect the card on the child’s behalf, or write a power of attorney to allow someone else to collect the child’s residence permit card on behalf of the legal guardian. The child’s legal guardian must sign the power of attorney. The following documents must be provided: copies of both the child’s and the legal guardian’s passports, a copy of the child's birth certificate, an official document (copy or original) showing who the legal guardian of the minor is, if someone other than the minor's parent/s.
