On October 12, 2025, a new digital Entry/Exit System (EES) will be introduced in the EU that applies to anyone travelling to or from Sweden and who is a third-country national. The purpose of the new system is, among other things, to make travel to the EU more efficient for travelers from third countries. Nationals of EU and Schengen area are not covered by the Entry Exit System.
For visits up to 90 days A Schengen visa is required for individuals of certain nationalities who wish to visit the Schengen countries for up to 90 days. A Schengen visa can be issued for a maximum of 90 days. U.S citizens and most citizens of North-, Central and South American countries do not need visas to visit Sweden if the visit is 90 days or less.

For visits longer than 90 days Citizens of countries outside of the EU who want to visit Sweden for a period of more than 90 days are required to have a visitor's permit. Residence permits for visit can apply for a maximum period of up to one year, although they are usually restricted to six months.
Extended processing time of up to 45 days for nationals of Ethiopia, The Gambia, and Russia (Non-essential travel):
On 7 October, 2021, the Council adopted Implementing Decision (EU) 2021/1781, suspending certain provisions of Regulation (EC) No 810/2009 (Visa Code) concerning The Gambia.
On 29 April, 2024, the Council adopted Implementing Decision (EU) 2024/1341, suspending specific provisions of Regulation (EC) No 810/2009 (Visa Code) concerning Ethiopia.
On 9 September, 2022, the Council adopted Decision (EU) 2022/1500 with updated guidelines on October 3, 2022, fully suspending the Agreement between the European Community and the Russian Federation on visa facilitation for EU and Russian citizens.
