Family members of EU/EEA citizens – required documents

This list of required documents applies for family members of EU/EEA citizens who benefit from the rights granted under Directive 2004/38/EC (the Free Movement Directive). It applies to family members accompanying or joining EU/EEA citizens who reside in or travel to a Member State other than the Member State of their nationality.

Family members of Swedish citizens traveling to or residing in Sweden normally do not fall under the Free Movement Directive, as they do not exercise their right of free movement.

Family members of EU/EEA citizens are exempted from paying the visa fee.

Below are the required documents:

  1. Schengen visa application form
  • Printed, completed and signed by each applicant
  • Application form can be downloaded in English or in Swedish through the following link: Application for Schengen Visa / Ansökan om Schengenvisering
  • Children under the age of 18 (minors), both parents must sign the application form
  • *Fields no. 21, 22, 30, 31 and 32 (marked with *) shall not be filled in.
  1. Photograph
  • Not older than 6 months
  • White background
  • Passport photo, size 35 mm x 45 mm
  • Clear facial features, head shown in full and centred

  1. Original passport / Travel document
  • Minimum 2 blank pages
  • Contains a signature of the passport holder
  • A recent copy must be submitted
  1. Proof of EU/EEA citizen’s nationality:
  • Copy of passport bio data page, or other identity document showing EU/EEA citizen’s nationality
  1. Proof of family ties

For example:

- Marriage certificate

- Birth certificate

Or other documentation showing that you fall under the category of a “family member” of an EU/EEA citizen who benefits from the rights granted under Directive 2004/38/EC (the Free Movement Directive), e.g. evidence relating to dependency.

  1. If accompanying the EU/EEA national:
  • Proof of traveling together with an EU/EEA family member to Sweden

For example:

  • Confirmation that EU/EEA will travel to Sweden or confirmation of common journey or, travel and accommodation arrangements, copy of flight reservations for both the applicant and his/her EU/EEA family member
  1. If joining an EU/EEA national:
  • Proof of joining an EU/EEA family member in Sweden

For example:

  • Evidence of EU/EEA citizen’s right of residence in Sweden (if EU/EEA citizen’s residence in Sweden is three months or longer)
  1. Minors (under 18) travelling alone or without one of the parents/legal guardians
  • Original letter of consent/authorisation signed by parents/legal guardians in front of a visa officer or duly legalised
  • If one parent has a sole custody: a copy of court decision or other proof of custody
  • Copy of non-travelling parent(s) passport(s) and UAE residence permit(s)

The applicant may submit other or additional documents that are relevant to his/her situation.

The embassy of Sweden in Abu Dhabi may request additional information or documents, and if deemed necessary, conduct an interview with the applicant by telephone or in person.

All documents should be submitted in Swedish or English and in A4 format.
