How to apply for work permit

Most people applying for a work permit should use the Swedish Migration Agency website and apply online. The employer can also fill in the application online on behalf of the employee.

Regardless of how you apply, your work permit must have been granted before you leave for Sweden.

How to proceed (for applications on paper forms, see further down):

Applying online

1. Prepare your documentation

Check which documents and personal data you need. The Swedish Migration Agency gives priority to applications that are completed in full, and you get a decision sooner.

Read more under ‘Required documents’ and on the Swedish Migration Agency website.

2. Applying

Follow the Swedish Migration Agency’s instructions. You attach documents electronically and pay the application fee using a VISA card or a MasterCard. Family members use the same online application if they apply at the same time as you.

The online application goes directly to the Swedish Migration Agency for processing and a decision.

3. Waiting for a decision

When the Swedish Migration Agency has reached its decision, you will be informed of this by email. The actual decision will be given to you when you visit the Embassy. Bring your passport when collecting your decision. Your employer or contractor will be informed of the decision by post.

4. Acquiring a residence permit card

If you are granted a permit for more than three months, a residence permit card will be issued to you.

Visit the Embassy to be photographed and fingerprinted for the card. You can do so after you have been granted a work permit. You can visit the Embassy without making an appointment on any working Tuesday between 09.30 and 12.30. Bring the same passport with you as the one you used when applying for a work permit.

You can find the Embassy’s address under ‘Contact’.

It can take up to four weeks for the residence permit card to be prepared and delivered to the Embassy. Once the card has arrived there, you can collect it without making an appointment on working Tuesdays or Thursdays between 16.00 and 16.30 or Fridays between 09.30 and 10.30. You must bring your passport with you.

NB! As the card is produced in Sweden, the Embassy cannot foresee the exact date of its arrival to Kyiv.  Georgian citizens have the possibility to collect the card at the Embassy of Sweden in Tbilisi.

Applying on a paper form

If you cannot or do not want to apply online, you have to apply on a paper form that you submit to the Embassy. Please note that paper form applications are not given priority.

1. Prepare the documentation

Check which documents and personal data you need. The Swedish Migration Agency gives priority to applications that are completed in full, and you get a decision sooner.

Read more under ‘Required documents’ and on the Swedish Migration Agency website.

2. Pay the application fee

If you apply on a paper form and submit the application at the Embassy, you must pay before your visit there. You must submit the receipt (in original) from the bank to the Visa Chancellery when applying for a work permit. The Swedish Embassy has a bank account in OTP Bank for application fees. The following bank details have to be used: Отримувач: Посольство Швеції в Україні Банк отримувача: АТ «ОТП Банк» Рахунок: 26002004400015, МФО: 300528 Код ЄДРПОУ: 22971307

You can pay the fee to any bank in Ukraine, not only OTP Bank branches. Please note that only those who submit an application on a paper form to the Embassy should pay the fee to this bank account. The fee will not be refunded in case of a rejection.

Read more under ‘Fees'.

3. Present an application at the Embassy

Bring the completed application form with you, together with all the required documents and a receipt for the fee payment.

You can present the application without making an appointment on any working Tuesday, 9.30-12.30.

You can find the Embassy’s address under ‘Contact’.

The Embassy will then send your documents to the Migration Agency in Sweden.

4. Wait for a decision

The Swedish Migration Agency informs the Embassy of its decision. The Embassy then contacts you. At the same time, your employer or contractor will be informed of the decision.

5. Arrange for a residence permit card

If you are granted a permit for more than three months, you will receive a residence permit card. You arrange for the card in the same way as described above under ‘Applying online’.

Follow your application online

At the Migration Agency website, you can see the current status of your work permit application.
