Sweden & Uganda

Required documents

If you are a citizen of a country outside the EU/EEA and wish to move to a family member in Sweden who is not a citizen of the EU/EEA either, you need the documents below.

If you apply online, you attach the documents electronically. However, you have to present the originals of the documents when you visit the Embassy.

If you apply on a paper form, you have to bring all the requisite documents to the Embassy, together with the completed special application form described below.

Document requirements

All documents must be provided in originals and one (1) photocopy of each for each applicant at the Embassy. Documents issued by the authorities in your country of origin must be translated into Swedish or English by an authorised translator.

Documents required by all applicants  

You need:

  • A valid passport
  • If you are not applying online, you need the form Application for residence permit to settle in Sweden, form no. 161011, and the form Family details, no. 239011. See heading below for information about children.
  • A passport sized photo in color
  • For citizens from a third country - a Ugandan residence permit or other documents showing that you legally are staying in the country need to be provided.

Married couples

If you are married, you need the following:

  • The documents required by all applicants (see above)
  • Wedding certificate or marriage certificate
  • A document showing that the marriage has been registered in your country of origin (equivalent to a civic registration certificate in Sweden), where possible
  • Proof of national registration, a rental contract or proof of sale for your joint residence, or other document that shows you have lived together (applies to persons who have lived in a country other than Sweden).

Unmarried couples

If you are not married, you need:

  • The documents required by all applicants:
  • Proof of national identity or other document issued by relevant authority showing that you are not married
  • Proof of national registration, a rental contract or proof of sale for your joint residence, or other document that shows you have lived together (applies to persons who have lived in a country other than Sweden)

Children under age

If you have children under 18 accompanying you to Sweden you can apply for a residence permit for them in your online application.

Children under age need:

  • The documents required by all applicants (see above).
  • If you are not applying online or if the child is applying alone, form no. 163011, Application for a residence permit for a child under the age of 18 to settle in Sweden, and form no. 239011, Family details.
  • Birth or kinship certificate.
  • Deah certificate, if one of the child's parents are deceased.
  • Written consent from the child’s legal guardian, who is not applying for a residence permit in Sweden, authorizing the child to join their mother/father or guardian in Sweden. If there is only one legal guardian, a document showing that this is the case must be attached to the application. An identity document from the legal guardian should be attached to the consent.
  • If the child applies without a legal guardian present at the Embassy, a written consent is needed from both legal guardians stating that the child can hand in the application at the Embassy, an interview can be conducted with the child and DNA to be taken if so deemed necessary. If there is only one legal guardian, a document showing that this is the case must be attached to the application. An identity document from both legal guardians should be attached to the consent. Find template of the consent letter below.
  • If the child is adopted, an adoption decison from the court or any other legal document proving the adoption is necessary.

Other close relatives

Other close relatives are members of your family other than your husband/wife/common law spouse, a minor or the parent of a minor.

If you are in this category, you need:

  • The documents required by all applicants (see above)
  • A document certifying that you and your relative are dependent on each other and have difficulty living apart, e.g. for social, emotional or financial reasons
  • A document showing how you are related
  • A document showing that you lived together immediately before the relative moved to Sweden
