New cascade for issuing Schengen visas adopted for Thai nationals
On 5 May 2026, the European Commission adopted more favourable visa rules for Thai nationals applying for Schengen visas, known as the “cascade” system. This new regime applies to Thai nationals residing in Thailand who apply locally for short-stay Schengen visas and, importantly, have an established travel history (bona fide travellers).
Under the cascade system, applicants may be granted a multiple-entry Schengen visa with longer validity. After obtaining and lawfully using one visa within the previous two years—regardless of its purpose or duration—they may be issued a visa valid for one year.
This one-year visa is subsequently followed by a two-year visa and then a five-year visa, provided that the previous visas have been used lawfully and the applicant’s passport has sufficient remaining validity.
The Commission Implementing Decision will apply locally to all Member State consulates as of 14 May 2026.
