Working in Sweden

Sweden is known for its dynamic economy, strong work culture and spirit of innovation. Sweden offers excellent opportunities for professionals, entrepreneurs, and researchers. Whether you are planning to work for a Swedish company, start your own business, or join an international team, this page will help you understand the basic requirements for working and living in Sweden.

For Citizens of Israel

If you are a citizen of Israel and wish to work in Sweden, you generally need a work permit before entering the country. You must receive your permit before travelling to Sweden and before you start working.

Applications for residence and work permits are handled by the Swedish Migration Agency, not by the Embassy of Sweden in Tel Aviv. For detailed information on how to apply, please visit: Swedish Migration Agency – Work Permits

Running a Business in Sweden

If you plan to start a company or conduct business in Sweden, you may need a residence permit for self-employment. You should be able to demonstrate:

  • Relevant experience in your field
  • A detailed business plan
  • Financial means to support yourself and your business
  • That your business will likely generate a profit

Practical Matters After Arrival

When moving to Sweden for work, there are a few important steps to take:

  • Register with the Swedish Tax Agency (Skatteverket)
  • Apply for a personal identity number (personnummer) if you will stay for more than one year
  • Register with the Swedish Social Insurance Agency (Försäkringskassan)
  • Make sure you have valid health insurance

These registrations make it easier to access healthcare, open a bank account, and receive other essential services in Sweden.

Language and Work Culture

English is widely spoken in Swedish workplaces, especially in international companies, but learning Swedish can greatly improve your opportunities for integration and career growth. Sweden’s work culture values trust, equality, and collaboration, with a strong emphasis on work–life balance.
