Entry and Exit Regulations in Ethiopia
The Swedish Embassy in Addis Ababa does not take responsibility for other countries' entry/exit requirements or visa policies.
Swedish citizens must obtain a visa to enter Ethiopia. Make sure you have during your stay in Ethiopia a valid visa or residence permit card and an entry stamp in your passport, regardless of which border you crossed or what means of transport you used to enter Ethiopia
Ethiopia does not accept temporary Swedish passports for entry—only for departure.
Foreign nationals must hold a valid Ethiopian visa or residence permit card during their entire stay in Ethiopia.
If your visa or permit has expired, a fine of USD $30 per day is imposed.
If your entry date cannot be verified due to a missing stamp in your passport, Ethiopian authorities may calculate the fine based on your date of birth, which can result in extremely high fees—there is no maximum limit on the fine.
To avoid this, ensure you always have:
A valid visa or residence permit card
An entry stamp in your passport, regardless of which border you crossed or what means of transport you used to enter Ethiopia
If you have a overstaying a fine will been issued by Ethiopian authorities and you will not be able to leave Ethiopia until the fee has been paid.
The Swedish Embassy in Addis Ababa unfortunately cannot influence decisions made by Ethiopian authorities concerning administrative fees or fines for overstaying in Ethiopia. It is not possible for the embassy to request reductions or cancellations of such fees/fines.
Swedish citizens who find themselves in this situation are urged to settle their obligations with Ethiopian authorities as soon as possible by visiting ICS office.
The embassy can assist with guidance and advice in line with existing rules and regulations.
