Swedish citizens who have never held a Swedish passport, national identity card or been registered in Sweden must apply for a coordination number in order to apply for a Swedish passport or national identity card.
If the guardians of a newborn child have not registered their name, it can done at the same time.
Application for a coordination number is made at the embassy only if the purpose is to apply for a passport/national ID card. The application is made during a personal visit to the embassy, and requires a pre-booked appointment. You need to book the appointment in our online booking system.
The embassy then forwards the application to the Swedish Tax Agency, which handles the case. It is not you who orders the coordination number for your child. The processing time for coordination numbers is approximately 6-10 weeks. Once the coordination number has been assigned, the applicant can book an appointment to apply for a passport/national identity card.
Please note that both guardians and the child must be present when applying for a coordination number.
All documents must be original documents.
When the coordination number is ready, the decision is notified to the applicant. You must then apply for a passport within three (3) months. If the passport is not applied for within three months, the coordination number will be cancelled. Neither a reminder of the deadline nor a notification of the withdrawal of the coordination number will be communicated to the applicant.
Time slots for application of passports and national identity cards are published in the online booking system on the first Wednesday of each month. Please find further information here on how to apply for a passport and other frequent questions.
A coordination number will be suspended at the end of the fifth calendar year if no notification or application for renewal has been received by the Swedish Tax Agency.
If you have a valid passport, it is valid until the expiry date even if a coordination number is suspended. When you apply for a new passport, the responsible passport authority will request the renewal of the coordination number.
For information about the status of your coordination number and when it is suspended, please contact the Swedish Tax Agency, which is the responsible authority.
If you have a coordination number and move, you must report a new address to the Swedish Tax Agency. It can either be an address in Sweden or an address in another country, but not both.
You also need to notify the Swedish Tax Agency if you change your personal data such as name or citizenship.
More information about the coordination number and its different status can be found on the Swedish Tax Agency's website:
