Ordinary passport for children under 18 years in Nigeria

Please ensure that you bring all necessary documents specified below to your passport/ID-card appointment at the Embassy. The same documentation is required regardless of whether you have had a Swedish passport previously or not.

At least one parent must accompany the child. You can book a time within three months. The process of getting the passport is around 2-3 weeks from the day of application. Please be in time for the appointment, if delayed more than 30 minutes we can’t guarantee that we can receive you.
Please, note that all documents must be in original.

  1. Make sure that the child has a Swedish ID number or a coordination number. You need this to be able to apply for a Swedish passport/National ID-card.

  2. At least one parent/legal guardian must accompany the child at the time of application.

  3. Book an appointment by sending an email to ambassaden.abuja@gov.se

  4. Complete and print the form "Verification of Swedish Citizenship" for the child. At least one parent must sign this form.
Note that it is important that the application form has been completely filled out when you arrive at the Embassy. If there is something in the application form that you do not understand, please ask someone for help before coming to your booked appointment.

  5. Complete and print the "Guardian Certificate form". The form needs to be signed by both guardians and witnessed by two adult persons (at the age of 18 years or more). Alternatively, the Embassy staff will witness the signatures at the time of application.

  6. Population registration certificate (Personbevis): Order from this webpage: Population registration certificate (Extract of the population register) | Skatteverket
Check with the Swedish Tax Agency that the personal information is correct. Passports and ID-cards will be issued in the name that is registered in the population register. If you need to change your address fill out and bring a printed and signed copy of the form "Ny adress/röstlängd för utvandrad" (only in Swedish).
    Download the form here

  7. If the child has another citizenship than Swedish citizenship, we need to see the national passport or other proof of that. The passport authority might want to see proof that your child has not become a citizen in a country where you have been living previously.

  8. The parents/guardians must certify their identity by showing valid passport/photo ID. If only one parent is accompanying the child he/she must bring the other parents valid passport/photo ID.  If one parent is in Sweden he/she can go to the Police office and sign the Guardian Certificate form before them and present the passport/photo ID to verify the signature and identity. After that the Police will scan and send us the form.

  9. Bring the current passport of the child, even if it has expired. If this is not possible, or in the case the child has not had a passport before, the parent need to verify the identity of the child. In this case bring a newly taken passport photo. A certification form will be filled and signed by the parent at the time of the application. More information about valid photo ID here.

  10. If one parent is the only guardian of the child, this must be verified by showing a legal document stating this.

  11. If the child has never lived in Sweden, you need to bring a birth certificate containing the names of both parents unless we have already processed the request for a coordination number prior to the application.

  12. If your child’s passport has been lost/stolen we need to see a police report. A form describing the events of the loss will be filled at the time of application. The lost/stolen passport will then be invalidated by the Embassy.

  13. The application fee is to be paid ahead of the application to the Embassy’s bank: ZENITH BANK IN NIGERIA
    ACCOUNT NUMBER: 1130018871
    ACCOUNT HOLDER: EMBASSY OF SWEDEN
Bring the receipt of payment to the application date.

  14. List of all Embassy fees is found here: List of Fees

  15. You can choose to pick up your passport/ID-card at another embassy/consulate if you notify the passport officer at the Embassy/authority where you submit your application. For example, you can apply for a passport in Sweden and have it sent to the Embassy in Abuja or apply at the Embassy in Abuja and pick it up at a consulate or at any other Swedish passport authority. If you wish to do so, you will pay an extra service fee (equivalent to 200 SEK) and when needed an extra DHL-fee. See the list above (14.)
