Swedish citizenship

Citizenship is a legal relationship between a state and an individual (citizen) that is obtained automatically by birth, after a notification or application. Only  Swedish citizens have the right to obtain a Swedish passport, vote in Swedish parliamentary elections , and reside in Sweden unconditionally.

  • Birth
  • Adoption
  • Legitimation (parents' marriage)
  • Application (naturalization)
  • Notification (children, young people aged 18-20, and citizens of Finland, Denmark, Norway, and Iceland).

Further information about Swedish citizenship can be found on the website of the Swedish Migration Agency.

Registering a Swedish citizen born abroad

Legal guardians of a child who has obtained Swedish citizenship by birth must proceed to register the child's name at the Authorities in Sweden. The name registration can be done directly through the Swedish Tax Agency (Skatteverket) or in conjunction with the requisition of a co-ordination number “Samordningsnummer” at the Embassy or the nearest Swedish Consulate in Italy. The requisition of a co-ordination number can only be done when there is a genuine intention to apply for a passport or Swedish ID-card  the Embassy in Rome.

Losing or retaining Swedish citizenship

A person born abroad who has never been resident in Sweden and has not visited Sweden under circumstances that prove a strong connection to Sweden lose the Swedish citizenship when turning 22 years old. To avoid losing the citizenship, it is possible to apply for retention of Swedish citizenship.

Dual and multiple citizenship

Sweden allows dual and multiple citizenship. However, the legislation of some countries does not allow dual citizenship.

Dual citizenship can in some cases limit the possibility for Swedish Authorities to provide consular assistance to an individual who also holds citizenship in the country where he is located.

Notification of Swedish citizenship for children born before April 1, 2015

A person born before April 1, 2015, to an unmarried couple where only the father holds Swedish citizenship must submit a notification of Swedish citizenship before it is possible to apply for a co-ordination number for the subsequent application for a passport or ID card.
