Här hittar du information som gäller oavsett var i världen du befinner dig. Om du undrar vad som gäller i ett specifikt land kan du välja det landet när du har valt ett av ämnena nedan.
The information here applies regardless of your location. For information on what applies in a specific country, choose that country when you have selected one of the topics below.
An Austrian "Meldebestätigung" or German "Meldebescheinigung" or other proof of residency in the country you live in
A birth certificate if you are born outside of Sweden and have never been registered in Sweden
In some cases, you also need a certificate that you have retained Swedish citizenship, or a citizenship declaration from the Swedish Migration Agency
Check with Skatteverket (Swedish Tax Agency) that your personal information is correct. Passports and ID-cards will be issued in the name that is registered in the population register. Fill out and bring a printed and signed copy of the form "Ny adress/röstlängd" (only in Swedish)
In some cases, the embassy may require additional documents to establish citizenship
The following documents in original are needed when applying for a passport/ID-card for children:
An international birth certificate if the child is born outside of Sweden and has never been registered in Sweden
An Austrian "Meldebestätigung" or German "Meldebescheinigung" or other proof of residency in the country the child lives in
In some cases, the embassy may require additional documents to establish citizenship
A coordination number (samordningsnummer) must be requested before a passport can be issued for the first time.
Please note that persons with a coordination number (samordningsnummer) must count on a longer processing time (4-6 weeks after application) to get their passport, if the number has been declared dormant by the Swedish Tax Agency. Unfortunately, the embassy has no influence on the processing time. See more information at Skatteverket.se.
Upon application, it usually takes two to four weeks before you can pick up your passport/ID-card at the embassy or a consulate. Don't forget to bring your old passport/ID-card when you pick up the new passport/ID-card.
The following ID-documents are accepted at the embassy for identification:
Swedish regular passport (provisional passports are not accepted)
Swedish national ID-card
Swedish driving license
Swedish SIS-labeled ID-card
The Swedish Tax Agency's ID-card for registered people in Sweden
ID-card issued by a Swedish state authority
Austrian regular passport
Austrian national ID-card
A relative, with an accepted ID-document (see question 3), can accompany you to the embassy to guarantee your identity. In that case you also need to bring your own passport picture.
If you are deregistered from Sweden and intend to marry at a foreign authority, you can apply for a marriage certificate at the embassy or a consulate.
Austrian "Meldebestätigung", or similar document showing where you and your future spouse are registered (not older than three months)
Family certificate from the Swedish Tax Agency for the applicant (not older than three months)
A document from austrian authorities that state that you aren't married or in a registred partnership.
Do you want to register your foreign marriage in Sweden or do you have further questions about marriage abroad? Please visit the Swedish Tax Agency's website for more information.
When applying for a coordination number for children, the Swedish citizenship must be verified for at least one parent. The child and at least one parent must be present at the time of application.
You need the following documents in original:
Both parents' passports
The child's Austrian "Meldebestätigung", or similar document showing where the child is registered (not older than three months)
The child's international birth certificate
Austrian Mutter-Kind-Pass/Childbirth or Pregnancy Certificate
A provisional passport is issued directly upon application and is issued for a single journey to Sweden or the country of residence, but can in some cases be issued for a specific trip to another country, however, for a maximum of seven months. You must prove your need for a provisional passport by showing a ticket or a booking.
As the application procedure for a provisional passport is different from a regular passport, please contact the embassy for more information on how to apply for a provisional passport, +43 1 217 530.
You are responsible to ensure that the country you intend to visit accepts Swedish provisional passports. Please also keep in mind that your regular passport will be revoked, if it is still valid, when you apply for a provisional passport.
If you move to Austria you can use your Swedish driving licence until its validity period expires. Afterwards the Swedish driving license must be replaced by a driving license from Austria. Contact informaion to Austrian authorities.
If you are registered in Sweden, but are temporarily located in Austria or Slovakia, you can renew your Swedish driving license and collect it at the embassy or a consulate. You can order a form from the Swedish Transport Agency.
The Swedish Transport Agency sends the new driving license to the embassy or consulate that you have written in your application. The embassy or consulate charges a fee when you pick up your driving license.
