Collection of passport & national ID Card once issued

Pick-up of passport & national ID card. No matter where you applied for your passport or national ID card, you can collect at the embassy in Canberra or one of the honorary consulates in Australia or New Zealand.

You will receive an automatic email when your passport/national ID card has arrived at the embassy. If you have informed us at the time of application that you wish to collect your passport/national ID card at a honorary consulate, you may disregard this notice. The embassy automatically forwards the passport/national ID card to the relevant consulate

When your passport or ID card is ready for collection, you will be contacted by the embassy or consulate usually by email. Neither the embassy nor the consulate can indicate a delivery time for when the passport is available for collection. 

Collection at consulates

You can pick up passports and ID cards at consulates in Australia and New Zealand. Contact details are provided below.

If you wish to collect your passport or national ID card at one of the mentioned consulates: 

  • You must book an appointment (by email or phone) to pick up your passport & national ID card. 
  • If you apply at the embassy in Canberra, state the consulate you want to collect it from at the time of application. There is an extra charge and a postage fee.(opens in a new tab)
  • If you apply at another passport authority, indicate the embassy in Canberra as the delivery point for the application. Then email the embassy at embassy.canberra-pass@gov.se with your full name, social security number/coordination number and the name of the consulate you want to pick it up at. There is an extra charge and a postage fee.(opens in a new tab)
    The passport should be collected promptly after the consulate has contacted you. 

Collection at the embassy

You must book an appointment (email embassy.canberra-pass@gov.se) to pick up your passport & national ID card. Important to bring when picking up at either consulates and embassies: 

  • Your current passport or another valid ID document if your passport has expired If you do not have a valid Swedish ID document, the Embassy of Sweden in Canberra accepts ID documents from Australia and New Zealand.
  • The receipt you received at the time of application.
  • Adults over the age of 18 must collect their passport in person. For children under 18, a guardian with a valid ID document is required to pick up the passport; The child does not need to be present at the pick-up.

Applied for a passport at another passport authority

No matter where you apply for the passport, you can pick it up at the embassy in Canberra. If you apply for a passport in Sweden or at another embassy but wish to collect your passport in Canberra, inform the passport authority when applying. Alternatively, you can contact the passport authority afterwards to reroute the passport, which may mean a delay. There is a delivery fee payable at pick-up.

Any visa/residence permits are transferred

Once a new passport has been obtained, any visas/residence permits linked to a previous passport must be transferred to the new one.
